Creativity is essential for our well-being—it nourishes our souls, energizes us, and allows us to thrive. But sometimes, we feel stuck. We lack the energy or courage to answer our inner call to create.
If you’ve ever felt this way, you’re not alone. Even the most creative and visionary figures in history faced obstacles. One such figure is St. Hildegard of Bingen—a woman far ahead of her time whose life and work continue to inspire us today.
Who Was St. Hildegard?
St. Hildegard of Bingen (1098–1179) was a visionary, healer, scientist, composer, and writer. She defied societal norms and followed her creative calling with unwavering determination. Despite living in a time when women had few opportunities, she founded her own abbeys, wrote groundbreaking medical texts, composed ethereal music, and created stunning works of art. She trusted deeply in the Divine and pursued her creative visions, no matter the challenges.
We can think of St. Hildegard as a patron saint of creativity—someone we can call upon for guidance and inspiration as we pursue our own creative dreams.

Here are three of my favorite insights from St. Hildegard that can help you move forward with your own creative pursuits:
1. You Are a Creative Being.
St. Hildegard had to summon great courage to bring her creative visions to life. One of her boldest endeavors was building her own abbey, an idea inspired by her deep admiration for St. Rupert’s work centuries earlier. Her song Jerusalem celebrates the realization of her vision and the kinship she felt with St. Rupert.
Your creative dreams matter, too! Tap into your inner courage and take the first step toward making them a reality.
2. You Have Great Strength.
One of the most powerful images of St. Hildegard is her holding her abbess staff, radiating confidence and inner strength. Despite the difficulties she faced, she trusted in the Divine and moved forward with conviction.
You, too, possess immense inner strength! Even when doubts arise, remember that you have the power to create and share your gifts with the world.
3. You Can Overcome Obstacles and Manifest Your Visions.
St. Hildegard lived to be 81—a remarkable age for her time. She faced opposition, self-doubt, and countless challenges but never let them stop her. When she set out to build her abbey on the Rhine River, she encountered many difficulties, yet she persevered and saw it through. Later, she even founded a second abbey!
Obstacles are a natural part of the creative process. The key is to keep moving forward, just as St. Hildegard did. Trust in your vision, gather your courage, and take the next step.

By looking to St. Hildegard for inspiration, we can unlock our own creative potential and bring our visions to life.
How will you respond to your soul’s longing for creativity today? What’s one small step you can take?
