What Sparks Your Curiosity?

Creativity begins with curiosity. If you allow yourself to follow your curiosity, very soon you’ll find yourself in the midst of creativity in your life. You’ll experience your creative nature.

But What Is Creativity?

Creativity’s an expression of who you are as a human being. You’re born as a creative being with unlimited possibilities. When you tap into your creativity, you open yourself to expressing your true nature.

You engage in creativity whenever you use your imagination or ideas to produce something new, something that’s uniquely created by you as an individual. It might be something in a physical form like a poem or a painting or a dance. Or it might be more in the realm of ideas such as a solution to a problem.

Creativity takes you out of your day-to-day life and brings you to a place where you can play. It can help you to express your feelings, thoughts and ideas.

All of us are creative in some way. Whether you sing, journal, draw, dance, cook, or something else, being creative can help you more deeply tap into who you are as a human being.

Creativity in Your Life

Where does creativity show up in your life?

Ask yourself right now, what are you curious about? What captures your interest and attention right now? How can you express this creatively?

I encourage you to find a way to explore your topic of interest through creativity. Here are 4 ideas to get started.

  1. Make a collage – Walk around your house or outside and gather some everyday items or pictures that you can use – colored paper, leaves, buttons, pebbles, twigs, paperclips, cloth, old cards, magazines and more. Cut and glue pieces on a big sheet of paper to express your thoughts on your topic of curiosity. Consider colors, textures, shape, size and placement in your creative process. Maybe it’s more realistic such as a vision for the future or 3D model of your dream. Maybe it’s more abstract and represents your mood as you explore your topic of interest.
  2. Write morning pages- Morning pages are not just for morning! They can be done any time of day. This is a popular way of journaling for writers and easy to do! Just open a notebook and begin writing your thoughts, in a stream of consciousness, on the page. No need to edit or check your writing for this is not to be shared with anyone. Just write down the thoughts, ideas and feelings that are running through your mind. This can get creative juices flowing!
  3. Move and sing – Put on some of your favorite music and start to move. Move in any way your body feels inspired from the music. Hum or sing along with the lyrics. Consider your topic of curiosity. How would it move or sing?
  4. Draw or paint- Get out some paper and colored pencils, crayons or paints. What colors most resonate with your topic of interest? Choose them. Create something inspired by your curiosity.

Creativity is not a solitary movement. This is its power. Whatever is touched by it, whoever hears it, sees it, senses it, knows it, is fed. That is why beholding someone else’s creative word, images, idea, fills us up, and inspires us to our own creative work. A single creative act has the potential to feed a continent. One creative act can cause a torrent to break through stone. -Clarissa Pinkola Estes

I hope you ignite your creativity today. Remember the power of one creative act!
