Friendship, Community, and the Healing Power of Connection

In our current times, we often celebrate independence and self-sufficiency. It can be easy to forget how much we actually need one another.

All of us have had people throughout our lives who have nourished us in ways both large and small. A friend who listened without judgment. A mentor who encouraged us when we doubted ourselves. A family member who remained steadfast through life’s challenges. A teacher whose wisdom arrived at just the right moment.

These connections have helped to shape who we’ve become.

When I turn to the life of St. Hildegard of Bingen for inspiration, I see she offers us wisdom in this area. While she did spend time in prayer and contemplation, she still understood the importance of community. She corresponded with people from all walks of life, offering guidance, encouragement, and insight. She nurtured communities of learning and spiritual growth, understanding that healing and transformation often happen in relationship.

We live in a time when many people feel increasingly disconnected. Technology allows us to communicate instantly, yet genuine connection can sometimes feel more elusive than ever. Loneliness has become a common experience, even among those surrounded by people.

The good news is that meaningful connection can begin with just one authentic relationship. When we feel seen, heard, and valued, something within us relaxes. We remember that we don’t have to carry life’s burdens alone. We remember that we belong.

As we grow older, friendship can take on new meaning. Our relationships evolve as children grow, careers change, and life circumstances shift. This time can offer an opportunity to deepen existing connections and cultivate new ones based on authenticity rather than obligation.

St. Hildegard’s example reminds us that spiritual growth is not only an inward journey. It is also expressed through how we support, encourage, and care for one another.

I invite you to give this a try today:

Take a few moments to think about someone who has nourished your life.

Perhaps it’s a longtime friend. A former teacher. A mentor. A sibling. A neighbor. Someone who offered support during a difficult season or simply showed up with kindness when it mattered most.

Now take the next step.

Reach out.

You might write a note, send an email, make a phone call, or schedule a visit.

Tell them specifically how they’ve impacted your life.

Share a memory. Express your appreciation. Let them know what their presence has meant to you.

You may be surprised by the effect this simple act has, not only on the other person, but on yourself too!

Gratitude deepens connection. Connection nurtures the heart. And a nourished heart is more resilient, compassionate, and open to life’s possibilities.

Like a garden, relationships flourish when they’re tended with care.

This summer, consider who has nourished your journey. Reach out. Express your gratitude. Strengthen the threads of connection that help sustain us all.
