The Energy Centers in Our Bodies: Why are they so important?

Everything in your body (and also in life!) is composed of energy and information. Everything moves or vibrates with this energy.

Chakras as Energy Centers

Chakras are energy centers within our bodies. We can’t see them, but we can picture them as swirling vortices of energy where matter and consciousness meet. They store the energy of our thoughts, feelings, experiences and actions. This invisible energy is our vital life force that keeps us vibrant, healthy and alive.

The word chakra means wheel or disk in Sanskrit. There are thousands of chakras in your body, but the 7 main ones are the information hubs.

These 7 main chakras, or swirling wheels of energy, align with the spine starting at the base of the spine and moving up to the crown of the head. They contain bundles of nerves and major organs. They work to regulate the flow of energy in our body so that we can have a variety of experiences  – mental, creative, sexual, emotional and more.

When energy flows to these chakras, it fills the area with the information each chakra needs to perform its unique work. For your body to work at its optimal level, energy and information must be able to travel through open channels easily and quickly.

The Lower Chakras of Matter

Each chakra is an energy center for specific areas of our life. The 3 lower chakras below the heart include the root, sacral and solar plexus chakras. These 3 are related to earthly matters such as survival and security, sex, creation, strength and power.

The Fourth Chakra as a Bridge

The fourth chakra, the heart chakra, is located at the center of the chest. It’s the bridge between the lower chakras of matter and the upper chakras of spirit. The heart chakra is our source of love, connection and compassion.

When we work to balance our lower chakras so they’re flowing without blockages, we can more easily open the spiritual chakras.

The Upper Chakras of Spirit
The upper chakras above the heart include the throat, brow and crown chakras. They are related to expressing yourself, clarity of perception, intuition and higher consciousness.

The Flow of Energy within the Chakras

The chakra system offers a way of seeing the holistic relationship between the mind and body. Sometimes a physical issue may alert you to a possible imbalance in your system. A recurring sore throat may be a clue to a blocked throat chakra. Frequent headaches in the forehead may be a blocked brow chakra. Other times, imbalances are more subtle.

Balancing the chakras restores the natural and harmonious flow of energy within you.

When your chakras are balanced, you’ll feel relaxed yet energized, centered and grounded.
