St. Hildegard’s Healing Wisdom: Reconnecting with the Power of Nature

In our fast-paced, screen-filled world, it’s easy to feel disconnected.

Disconnected from ourselves, from the earth, from the quiet rhythm of life.

But over 900 years ago, St. Hildegard offered a powerful remedy that can help us even today— return to nature.

For St. Hildegard, nature was sacred. She believed the earth held immense healing potential and that by aligning ourselves with its rhythms, we could find renewal in body, mind, and spirit. She created a word for this life-giving force in nature— viriditas.

What is Viriditas?

Viriditas means “greening power” or “the greening life force.” Viriditas can be described as the divine life force that lives and breathes within all living beings. This potent force is full of vitality able to bring creativity and healthy abundance into the world. It makes all things grow, expand, and thrive. It’s the energy that animates all living things—a sprouting seed, a newborn calf, the healing power of an herb.

St. Hildegard saw viriditas as a spiritual force, a divine energy flowing through nature and within us too. When we lose touch with this energy, we become depleted and unwell. When we reconnect with it, we heal. We blossom. We thrive.

St. Hildegard’s Wisdom for Today

You don’t need to live in the 12th century to receive the healing St. Hildegard spoke of. In fact, her insights are quite valuable for today.

Many of us feel pulled in so many directions every day. We may be navigating health changes, caring for aging parents, or transitioning careers. At the same time, something deeper may be stirring, a longing to reconnect with ourselves, to slow down, to heal and grow.

St. Hildegard extends an invitation to all of us to step outside and touch the earth. Let the greening life force flow through you again. Here are 3 easy ways to bring this wisdom into your life today.

  1. Walk with Presence

Even a short walk in your neighborhood can be healing if done with intention. Notice the color of the trees, the sound of a bird, the chill of the breeze.

  1. Care for Plants

St. Hildegard believed in the healing properties of plants. Gardening or even tending a small herb pot on your windowsill can reconnect you to the rhythm of life.

  1. Sit Outdoors

Find a place to sit—beneath a tree, by a stream, or even in your backyard. Let yourself just be in nature without needing to do anything. Let Mother Earth support you. Receive the calm and clarity that comes when you slow down.

These 3 simple actions can help you discover that nature holds the blueprint for our own healing, wisdom St. Hildegard knew long ago. The cycles of growth, rest, decay, and renewal that we see in the earth are also in us. When we remember this, we begin to heal.

Whether you’re tending a garden, walking through a forest, or simply standing barefoot on the grass with your morning coffee, you are returning to the flow of viriditas, the sacred greening energy that renews all life, including yours.
